چکیده

The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology encouraged the publication of works that investigate and evaluate the performances of the second round SHA-3 candidates. Besides the hardware characterization of the 14 candidate algorithms, the main goal of this paper is the description of a reliable methodology to efficiently characterize and compare VLSI circuits of cryptographic primitives. We took the opportunity to apply it on the ongoing SHA-3 competition. To this end, we implemented several architectures in a 90 nm CMOS technology, targeting highand moderate-speed constraints separately. Thanks to this analysis, we were able to present a complete benchmark of the achieved post-layout results of the circuits.

Fair and Comprehensive Performance Evaluation of 14 Second Round SHA-3 ASIC Implementations

Hardware implementation quality will be considered as an important factor for evaluating the NIST SHA-3 competition candidates in the second round. The most traditional and popular hardware im plementation method is designing ASICs with standard cells. However, to benchmark 14 second round SHA-3 ASIC designs based on a fair and comprehensive methodology can be very challenging because of the u...

Hardware Benchmarking of Cryptographic Algorithms Using High-Level Synthesis Tools: The SHA-3 Contest Case Study

The growing number of candidates competing in the cryptographic contests, such as SHA-3, makes the hardware performance evaluation extremely time consuming, tedious, and imprecise, especially in the early stages of the competitions. The main difficulties include the long time necessary to develop and verify HDL (hardware description language) codes of all candidates, and the need of developing ...

Evaluation of Hardware Performance for the SHA-3 Candidates Using SASEBO-GII

As a result of extensive analyses on cryptographic hash functions, NIST started an open competition for selecting a new standard hash function SHA-3. One important aspect of this competition is in evaluating hardware implementations and in collecting much attention of researchers in this area. For a fair comparison of the hardware performance, we propose an evaluation platform, a hardware desig...

Comprehensive Comparison of Hardware Performance of Fourteen Round 2 SHA-3 Candidates with 512-bit Outputs Using Field Programmable Gate Arrays

In this paper, we extend our evaluation of the hardware performance of 14 Round 2 SHA-3 candidates, presented at CHES 2010, to the case of high security variants, with 512 bit outputs. A straightforward method for predicting the performance of 512-bit variants, based on the results for 256-bit versions of investigated hash functions is presented, and confirmed experimentally. The VHDL codes for...

Silicon Implementation of SHA-3 Final Round Candidates: BLAKE, Grøstl, JH, Keccak and Skein

Hardware implementation quality is an important factor in selecting the NIST SHA-3 competition finalists. However, a comprehensive methodology to benchmark five final round SHA-3 candidates in ASIC is challenging. Many factors need to be considered, including application scenarios, target technologies and optimization goals. This work describes detailed steps in the silicon implementation of a ...
